Vibration vs Percussion Therapy: What’s the Difference?

Vibration and percussion are often discussed together because both use motorized movement, but the movement pattern and resulting feel can be very different.

Simple definitions

Vibration typically uses rapid, relatively small oscillations. Percussion uses repeated strokes that move a treatment head into and away from tissue. Device implementations vary, so these are category-level descriptions rather than medical promises.

How they can feel different

Short-stroke vibration generally feels more like rapid buzzing or oscillation, while percussion can feel like repeated tapping or pounding. Comfort is individual and depends on body area, device settings and technique.

Do not compare RPM/VPM alone

Frequency, amplitude/stroke, attachment shape, motor behavior and contact force interact. A higher numerical speed does not automatically mean a more effective or more powerful device.

Choosing a direction

If you prefer short-stroke vibration, Rapid Release is a logical brand to research. If you want deeper percussion, mainstream massage-gun brands may fit better.
